MENTONE — A quickly assembled pop-up block party to see the historic Union Pacific’s Big Boy 4014 pass through Mentone attracted a bigger-than-expected crowd Friday afternoon.
The fire department’s event blossomed into a festive environment and drew hundreds of people.
The fire department planned to grill 100 hot dogs, but quickly scrambled to make available 500 hot dogs after interest in the event became apparent.
People lined the tracks near the fire station and also enjoyed free snow cones while Slate Creamery sold ice cream and other treats as people waited for the train.
The event came less than a week after the town celebrated the 80th anniversary of its famous egg at the Mentone Egg Fest.
Slate Creamery, which opened its food truck last year, saw a long line of people eager to buy ice cream and treats.
“We’re running out of everything,” said Erica Snyder, who owns and operates the business with her daughter, Allee.
“I think it was a pretty good day!”
Below are a few photos of the event.
