WARSAW — Several dozen people gathered at the Kosciusko County Courthouse in Warsaw Wednesday night for a reading of the Declaration of Independence.
The original reading in 1776 happened four days after the Fourth of July to allow for the preparation and dissemination of the document to all people, ensuring that citizens were informed of their new status as independent states.
The event was coordinated with communities across the country, and Warsaw-area resident Terry White had the privilege of reading the document out loud on the courthouse lawn.
Wednesday’s event was one of two happening this week at the courthouse in commemoration of America’s 250th birthday.
The next event is at 6 p.m. Friday with the dedication of a Liberty Tree on the east side of the courthouse lawn.
The reading and Friday’s event have been organized by the ML Community Impact Alliance, Freedom Fest, Our America 250 and other community partners.
