WARSAW — As the parasitic illness known as Cyclosporiasis continues to spread across the country, the Indiana Department of Health has reported hundreds of positive cases in northeast Indiana.
The illness causes fatigue and what’s commonly described as explosive diarrhea.
Nine cases have been identified in Kosciusko County. Elkhart is reporting 22 cases, Fort Wayne with 36 and 21 in South Bend.
Michigan has reported the most cases across the country with several thousand documented.
While specific sources of the exposure have not yet been identified, health officials say the infection has been commonly associated with fresh produce.
The Indiana Department of Health now has a dashboard that’s tracking the illness county-by-county.
Symptoms occur two to 14 days after exposure and may include:
- Frequent watery diarrhea
- Loss of appetite and weight
- Abdominal cramps and bloating
- Nausea
- Low-grade fever
