WARSAW — For the second time in recent years, The Salvation Army of Kosciusko County has provided land to Habitat for Humanity that led to the construction of a new home.
On Thursday, Habitat celebrated the construction of a new home on Lyon Street in Waraw for Brianna Adams and her two children.
That home is just north of another property on Elsworth that the Salvation Army donated to Habitat for a new home just a few years ago.
Salvation Army Envoys Ken and Sina Locke, who retired earlier this year, attended Thursday’s celebration and talked with News Now Warsaw afterward about the chapter’s willingness to support Habitat.
Ken Locke said it marks one of their biggest achievements.
“We’re grateful that Indianapolis, our headquarters … said ‘Yes,’ that we could donate the property,” Sina Lock added.
Ken Locke said the non-profit had owned the land for quite a while and pleased that the land was able to be revitalized.
He said the entire immediate neighborhood is looking much better these days.
The Lockes, as well as Ben Logan, Habitat’s local executive director, both said donations of land to Habitat are the driving force behind Habitat’s continued success as they build upon recent efforts to construct three homes per year.
For Brianna Adams, the new homeowner, she said she’s the first in her family to experience home ownership.
She provided 250 hours of sweat equity into the project and enjoyed the construction aspect.
“I love doing the work. The construction was my favorite part. To know I put my own effort into the build. And even to know things that if something happens in the house that I was able to fix it or know where to go to fix it,’ Adams said.
She said her family had been living in a mobile home park with various problems.
Admitting she is shy, Adams thanked everyone who helped make the home a reality during Thursday’s ceremony.
